JM/VO “Log” 12:28am
John Santos/Machete “Cambia El Canal” (20th Anniversary) 5:50

Program/Liner Note: Cambia El Canal – Change the Channel is a literal and figurative reference to the need to take an active role in changing our deteriorating reality. Destruction of the environment, the joining of church and state, pre-emptive war, open violation of civil and human rights, the elimination of funding for the arts, non-existent health care and countless other sweet gifts being left for future generations can only be changed through individual activism. Once again John Santos and Machete employ the two great rhythmic traditions of Afro-Puerto Rican origin: the bomba and the plena.
Features Jerry Medina on lead vocal and Jerry Joel Medina Carrión on spoken word.

John Santos/Machete “La Juventud” (20th Anniversary) 7:22

Program/Liner Note: La Juventud - The Youth is for the young people of the world with much love and respect. Today’s youth are the hope of the world. It is a son montuno that also pays homage in its style to the blind genius tresero, padrino of mambo, Arsenio Rodríguez (1911-1970). Arsenio was a cutting-edge innovator and improviser from his youth until the end of his life, addressing the issues of racism and social conditions in several of his compositions. Features Jerry Medina, lead vocal, trumpet and Orlando Torriente, lead vocal with Rico Pabón, spoken word.

JM/VO “Log” 12:42am
Eddie Palmieri “Para Que Escuchen” 6:08
  (El Rumbero del Piano)
John Santos/Machete “Que No Se Muera El Tambó” (S.F. Bay) 6:16

Program/Liner Note: Que No Se Muera el Tambó is dedicated to all who defend and honor the legacy of the drum. It is dedicated to Eddie Palmieri and Armando Peraza.

John Santos/Machete “Commitment” (20th Anniversary) 6:36

Program/Liner Note: Commitment is a jazzy mambo-rumba for all who choose to work towards justice in our communities and globally, despite the instant gratification, pleasure traps, and deception dangled in front of our faces. Dedicated in particular to four outstanding community organizations in the San Francisco Bay Area that have been going far beyond the call of duty for many years: La Peña Cultural Center, El Centro Cultural de la Misión, Speak Out, and Youth Speaks.

“¡Con Salsa!” dedicates the first hour of today’s program to the students, faculty and administrators at the Greater Egleston Community High School in Jamaica Plain – special shout-out to Julie Coles, Headmaster, and our friends Esmirna Soto and Samuel Caraballo.

JM/VO “Wrap-Up/ID” 1:00am
Frankie Rodríguez “Y Sigue La Salsa” 2:48

John Santos Quintet “Papa Mambo” (Papa Mambo) 7:25

Program/Liner Note: Papa Mambo – is lovingly dedicated to our mentor, musical Papa, guru, maestro extraordinario, Cachao (Israel Lopez). Aside from being one of the creators of the mambo, he is undoubtedly one of the greatest musicians of the 20th century (and still going strong in the 21st). “Maferefun baba ochicambo” and “Eki baba oku aiye” are traditional Yoruba praises for the highly respected orisha, Obatalá, who according to Yoruba mythology, is the patron of the elderly and represents peace and wisdom among his many attributes.

John Santos/Machete “Chano Pozo” (S.F. Bay) 7:43

Program/Liner Note: Chano Pozo is the reworking of legendary conguero Mongo Santamaría’s original rumba, which was recorded in San Francisco in May of 1959. It is a tribute to the great composer, percussionist, choreographer, and character, Luciano “Chano” Pozo y González who was murdered in a Harlem bar in December of 1948. Mongo played bongos in Chano’s Conjunto Azul during the 1940s in Havana. Chano revolutionized the jazz world through his brief one and a half-year stint with Bebop master, Dizzy Gillespie from 1947-1948.

JM/VO “Log” 1:19am
John Santos/Machete “El Changui de Peraza” (20th Anniversary) 5:44

Program/Liner Note: El Changui de Peraza is dedicated to perhaps the greatest bongosero in the history of that instrument, octogenarian Armando Peraza, whose graceful touch is still in plain evidence here. Armando’s friendship and advice over the last 30 years have been, needless to say, highly cherished. The changui, from the beautiful region of Guantanamo, is one of the oldest forms of Afro-Cuban son.

JM/VO “Log” 1:26am
John Santos/Machete “Descarga Fajardo” (S.F. Bay) 3:50

Program/Liner Note: Descarga Fajardo is dedicated to the late, great Cuban flautist, José Fajardo. It was never intended to be a posthumous tribute. Orestes Vilató and Wayne Wallace spontaneously came up with this homage in the studio in the presence of El Maestro.

Andrea Brachfeld “Fajardo Medley” (Son Charanga) 5:08
JM/VO “Log” 1:40am

Program/Liner Note: Raíces al Cielo – is dedicated to the trend-setting composer/pianists Noro Morales, Luis Martinez Griñan (Lilí), Pedro Justiz (Peruchin), and Charlie and Eddie Palmieri, all of whom walked tall (and continue to walk, in the case of Eddie) with one foot in the world of jazz and the other in the world of Afro-Caribbean rhythm.
